Waterfowl

The significant number of waterfowl inhabiting the park has caused problems. The overgrazing of grass; accumulation of droppings and feathers; public health concerns; and attacks to people enjoying the walking trail have posed challenges. For the safety of those visiting Kish Park, a solution has been developed.

Derry Township has entered a cooperative service agreement with USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Wildlife Services (WS) to cooperate in a wildlife damage management project.

APHIS WS personnel, who have been professionally trained in wildlife damage management, will assist Derry Township in implementing an integrated waterfowl damage management program (IWDM).

1. Derry Township will institute a no feeding wildlife policy and actively enforce the policy with an ordinance.
2. APHIS WS will conduct nest and egg treatment for the nesting season.
3. APHIS WS will use visual deterrents, remote controlled boats, etc., on park property 2-3 times per week from May to August. From September throughout December, techniques will be used on an as-needed basis.
4. APHIS WS will remove all domestic waterfowl from agreed upon park properties using nets or traps.
5. WS will conduct woodchuck removal, if requested.
